From the gardens in Chantilly, walking with Christian as he described what it was like to be french, growing up in Zimbabwe. And then now, as an adult, being a Zimbabwean living in France. He stood and looked across the ponds, thinking a lot. A world class violinist. A dreamer and a believer. Christian has the energy to make it happen, to keep believing in spite of extraordinary circumstances. He was talking about going back to Zimbabwe. He missed the open lands, the smell of the autumn trees. Christmas beetles and sun jam. We walked and walked and walked. One of the best walks I have had in my life, with one of the most incredible humans. “its not OUI’ he said trying to explain ‘you just say oue, as in where. It is still french for yes, but its local. They’ll know you’re not from here if you say oui.’ Yes, you can. Just keep swimming.
