Description

Look for this baobab if you are ever near Chipinda Pools in southern Zimbabwe. It is up on the western ridge as you descend into the rocky gorge. The night ridge baobab and its stories from 1993 with Christopher Weare and the long walk from Chinguli. After walking for seven hours in the heat, he said you could swim in any of the pools. He said there were no crocodiles. The free choices of a naïve childhood. He now walks seven hours ahead of me in a foreign country. He better not swim in the pools there or fill up his water can, Croc Dundee would have an objection. The teacher/guide that was walking with us that day in Gonarezhou National Park, quite vociferously told Christopher to ‘get out’ of the water. Christopher indignantly muttered to me ‘What does he know?’ It is interesting that he is now a teacher/guide – I suspect he is still the type to jump in foreign pools. Now, with all the younglings in his charge shouting that he is a fool. Better a fool than a flake. As a flake never maketh a fellow. And a fine fellow he is. I miss him.
